The idea was developed in 2001:

To raise an avalanche of folklore which entrances more and more ensembles and visitors and finally ''overruns'' all – with music and dance, mutual conversations, experiences, adventures, as a cheerful meeting of the cultures ...

An ''International Folklore Avalanche" so, with which the Spree-Neisse District wants to continue its efforts for international understanding and meetings and give the people in the region the opportunity to learn more about other cultures.

The throughout positive response of participants and audience encouraged us to make the festival an annual event. Meanwhile, the ''International Folklore Avalanche'' became a highlight of the cultural life in the region and a nice tradition. More than 300 active participants from different countries present the cultural roots of their nations every year in spring for three days. In total 196 folklore ensembles from Albania, Algeria, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegowina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the Ukraine and the USA were guests of the Spree-Neisse District since the first festival in 2001.
